UNIT 4 #5
In this unit I used the standard in order to compare stories to the words I learned. Learning the vocabulary makes it a whole lot easiar to know what you are reading.
UNIT 4 #4
RICHARD COREY
The poem to me is very messed up. It shows that only because someone has it all doesn't mean they are as happy as they should be.
This poem is Disillusionment because it imagined someone was perfect even though on the inside they were worse then others. Its like you think something that may not at the end be true.
"In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place."
This quote shows how they thought the man was everything they ever wanted to be. He ends up shooting himself which shows that they didn't realize what he was really going through.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MENDING WALL
I thought this poem was very confusing. You basically have to say what you think it might be saying.
To me it is Disillusionment because the author is being tricked. The neighbor tells him he likes the wall even though he really doesn't, because he breaks it every winter.
"And he likes having thought of it so well
He says again, “Good fences make good neighbours.”
This quote shows how the neighbor is lying to him.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A DREAM DEFERRED
This poem is a little on the sad side. It gives examples like how bad it is to want something, but not being able to have it
The poem relates to The Harlem Renaissance because its saying that a slave had a dream that may never happen. They didn't want to be slaves they had a dream to not be slaves but that dream may never happen.
"Does it stink like rotten meat?"
This quote shows how the dream being deferred may feel. Such as it sucks and is not a good thing. Its not good to have a dream that you know may never become real.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE NEGRO SPEAKS OF RIVERS
The poem made me want to appreciate people who do different things for us.
This poem also relates to The Harlem Renaissance because it showed complimants of the black culture. THR had to do with aspects of culture and that is exactly what this poem does.
"I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it."
This quote showed how the boys ancestors were the one who built these pyramids. So it makes it part of his culture.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INCIDENT
The poem was really racist to me. I dont think that people should discriminate on people just because they are a different color.
This poem relates to The Harlem Renaissance due to it talks about slavery. The Harlem Renaissance was a point where black people were treated un equal and this shows that by calling the black boy a nigger he was shown to be not equal.
And so I smiled, but he poked out
His tongue, and called me, "Nigger."
This quote shows how the baltimore boy was being racist.

UNIT 4 #3
Something I really liked about this story is its a party I would want to go to. Its like a club now, but its free to go to that party. I didn't like how they used Mr. Gatsby for their entertainment. These days you will never find someone like Gatsby to let you just come in their home and do as you please. It showed that people back then did not have anything good to do in their life, but party. They had no feelings for noone and just wasn't worried about anything. You can also say they had no manners and was very un appreciative.
The theme of the jazz age is represented in the story by showing how people took advantage of money. Also how they partied, drinked and was careless like in the Jazz age. In the Jazz Age people never worried about problems in life just like in this story..
"As soon as I arrived I made an attempt to find my host, but the two or three people of whom I asked his whereabouts stared at me in such an amazed way, and denied so vehemently and knowledge of his movements,"
This quote in the story tells us how noone at the party knew who Mr. Gatsby was. They would just shop up to the party and expected to be entertained. The Jazz Age campares to this by showing how people just didn't care. They show no appriciation to Gatsby at all through out the story, and this is things people would do back in the Jazz Age.
The author tried to get a point across in this story by saying people in america were worthless, and all they did in life was try to have a good time.

UNIT 4 #2
The Jazz Age
I chose this one over the rest bacause it stood out to me more then the others. It has to do with partying and drinking and those kinds of things are interesting. Also that alcohol was illegal at that time so I may be able to learn the differences between when it was illegal and now that its legal. I will be using the standard Connection to compare these two time periods having to do with alcohol. I expect to see changes in music and popular fashion, and how woman acted at this time. I also ecpect to see how this period affected woman. It should tell me that people back in the day could not always just have fun and not worry about life. That you have to take responsibility in life.

ELAALRL5 The student understands and acquires new vocabulary and uses it correctly in reading and writing.
I have the most difficult with this standard because I have alot of trouble memorizing different vocabulary words. If the words do not interest me I dont really pay them no attention.

UNIT 3 #12
1.) I did this by taking quotes from stories and explaining what it has to do with something.
2.) I did this by writing my own story. I made my own theme and made is realism.
2.) I did this by writing my own story. I made my own theme and made is realism.
UNIT 3 #11
a) Realism
b)Bill is on the road of loosing everything. You may ask why this is? Bill has officially lost his job due to economic problems we are having. He is now poor like the people in the ghetto. He is really skinney like a stick from lack of eating. Bill is nothing with no job and no money. He could even remind you of them homeless people who lives under th bridges. He no longer showers like the jamaicans. So this means he looks very oily like greace. Now Bill has no life, and no future. He has nothing left to do.
C) This is realism by the social issue being economic problems. People losing their jobs and having no life without money. Also by the man being described exactly how he is now that he lost his job. You can really picture how the man is suffering.

UNIT 3 #10

This would not be romanticism due to the thing where you do not have to use your imagination. This picture does not try to make you feel any better about what you see. So It obviously is realism. The picture is very ugly and disturbing. It shows you exactly how it is in the bathroom. It dont put things in there to try to get you to like it
UNIT 3 #9
Realism is made to disturb you not to make you feel better about things. You can say they tell it like it is not how you would expect it to be. The man in the story was suffering of being sick and whipped my Convey. Insted of imagining he specifically tells you how he was. "From the crown of my head to my feet, I was covered with blood; my shirt was stiff with blood. My legs and feet were torn in sundry places with briers and thorns, and were also covered with blood. I suppose I looked like a man who had escaped a den of wild beasts, and barely escaped them." This to me was very disturbing, but gave me a complete idea of what it was like being in his shoes.
The Battle with Mr. Convery social issue was slavery. "It was a glorious resurrection, from the tomb of slavery, to the heaven of freedom." This gives you an idea of how this man felt about slavery. Saying from the tomb of slavery is saying it was horrible. Throughout the story he describes how awful it is being a slave and how he didn't want to be one. Luckily we have now changed the laws where we no longer have cruel things like this going on.

UNIT 3 #8
Kate chopin was a realist, because she didn't want her readers to use their imagination. She gives very specific details so that we will know exactly how she felt at the time. Such as this qhoute."When she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under her breath: "free, free, free!" The vacant stare and the look of terror that had followed it went from her eyes. They stayed keen and bright. Her pulses beat fast, and the coursing blood warmed and relaxed every inch of her body." This shows the joy she had knowing that her husband would no longer be there. It helps you feel the same way she did at that point in time.
The social issue in this story was that husband's were controling their wifes. Kat never specifically said this was the problem, but saying she felt free showed what she was trying to say. Back in the day this was not a problem to anyone, it was actually normall. Now it is against the law, and you could be arrested for it. such as when she says "There would be no one to live for during those coming years; she would live for herself. There would be no powerful will bending hers in that blind persistence with which men and women believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow-creature. A kind intention or a cruel intention made the act seem no less a crime as she looked upon it in that brief moment of illumination."

UNIT 3 #7
1.)I used evidence by taking quotes from piece of writings to illustrate my understanding of the dark romantics were arguing with the transcendentalist about there is evil in people.
2.)I always found the theme by finding the whole point of what the author is trying to say. Such as in the poem Raven the whole point was that there was evil in people's minds.
3.)One example i used was relating the poem Raven to Transcendentalist. i showed how what the transcendentalist say is not always the truth.

UNIT 3 #6
The Bird...
I believe it is the bird, because the bird symbolizes the evil and depression the man is feeling.
"On this home by Horror haunted--tell me truly, I implore--
Is there--is there balm in Gilead?--tell me--tell me, I implore!"
Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore."
This quote shows how the raven tells him nothing but bad.

UNIT 3 #5
The poem seemed at first really pointless to me. As I started to understand it I started to realize what the whole point of the poem was. The most interesting thing to me was how you can tell all the pain the guy felt for loosing his wife. It can be sad but at the same time interesting. The bird in this poem really made it interesting.
The poem describes anti-Transcendental by showing that people can really be evil. The bird in this poem took the intuition of the man. The transcendentalist believed that god was the one who controlled all that, but in this poem that was not the case. They would believe this story was completely stupid, and never could happen.
"And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor shall be lifted, Nevermore." This quote explains how there is evil and depression within the guy. Transcendentalist did not believe there was any evil, depression, insanity etc. in anyone. There is no bird in this world that can talk like this one did in this poem. So that just tells you it was the guys head telling him this stuff. Well the transcendentalist believed everyones mind was completely perfect and this mans wasn't.

UNIT 3 #3 and 4
"The Black Cat"
This story to me was very interesting. He wrote everything to where it actually felt as if you were there. It seemed like i could really picture everything that happened. I even did not want to stop reading. The story also helps you learn something.
It has to do with Dark Romantics by showing that people are the ones who do evil. They do not do it, because god wanted them to. The guy had a really strong guilt yet went back and did the crime again. This tells you it was all him. There is no possible way god would want a person to take another persons life and that is exactly what he did. The Transcendantalists believed nothing like this could happen, because everyone does nothing but good. This proves what they say is wrong. The guy also did have alot of guilt for what he did which means he know he didn't do something good.
"For months I could not rid myself of the phantasm of the cat;"

UNIT 3 #2
I would have to say I am more on the Dark Romantics side. I do believe in original sin, and everything that comes with it. I believe everything someone does is not because god wanted you to, but because it was your decision. I also do not believe that our mind is a powerful thing. I believe god gave it to us to know what were doing.
UNIT 3 #1
The standard to means that students write essays, narratives, poems, or technical documents to make them understand better. They put in a way to help them recognize what they are writing. This maybe by using writings which come easy to them.
I will do this by for one writing more, and for two learning how to write different things.

Unit 2 # 7
The guy from the video Wilderness is an example of transcendentalist, because he seperates himself from people and do something he wants to do. For years and years he lived in the forest surviving from things around him. He made himself a part of nature like transcendentalist believe we all are.
"Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist".

Unit 2 # 6 Self-Reliance
The transindintalist like this story believed you should b your own person. You should not try to be like someone else because this just makes you be like god wanted someone else to be. They both also believe that every individuals mind is a really great thing. They believe that god gave you a mind to do the things he wanted you to do.
"A foolish consistency is the hobgolin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines".
This quote means that you are stupid if you try being like someone else.

Unit 2 # 5 Self Reliance
This story sorta reminds me of myself. I dont do as other people do I do what I feel I want to. I also do not try to be like anyone else. Being like other people is you not being yourself. I out of alot of people is not afraid to be myself whether I stand out or not. If the world was like this we all would be unique in our own little way.
"Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members".
This quote means that everyone trys to be like one another.

UNIT 2 #6 from Nature
The story has a way of saying everyhting is part of one. This like the Transcendentalists who believe all humans share one soul. The story tells you to not be retarted and try to figure out nature just enjoy that its all around you. The trancendentalist also believe there is no way of knowing how anything works. They also enjoy everything around them and believe god who put it there for them to enjoy. They both believe the mind is away of talking to god and being a part of nature.
"Standing on the bareground-my head bathed by the blithe air, and uplifted into intinite space- all mean egotism canishes. I become a transparent eyeball. i am nothing. I see all".
I used this quote, because it explains how you can feel as part of nature.

UNIT 2 # 5 from Nature
This story to me is something we really all should try to do. It seems as if its away to be stress free and not worry so much about problems you may have in life. Enjoying the amazing things god has created is one of the most best things you can do do, because nature really is beautiful. This Essay reminds me of a day at the lake when you watch the moon sit right above it. This is a part of nature that really calms me down a feel apart from the real world.
"Nature always wears the colors of the spirit".
This quote stood out to me due to when im at the lake all the colors and things around me shows happiness and enjoyment.

1)I have used this standard by when I answer a question I have to put direct evidence from the passage supporting what i said.
2)Lookin for the theme helped me really realize what the stories were about. By knowind the theme it helps you understand what you need to get from the story.
3)You use alot of comparing such as logic from non logic. You take things that was written in the past and put it in away you can understand it now.

1-You imagine that nature is talking to you.
"All that tred
The globe are but a handful to the tribes
That slumber in its bosom".
2-It tells you that when you get scared of death turn to nature to help you.
"Go forth, under the open sky, and list
To Nature's teachings, while from all around-
Earth and her waters, and the depths of air--
Comes a still voive".
3-Says that when regular people die the same thing happens to people who may be a higher rank of people such as kings.
"Thou shalt lie down
With patriarchs of the infant world -- with kings,
The powerful of the earth -- the wise, the good,
fair forms, and hoary seers of ages past,
All in one mighty sepulchre".

UNIT 2 #2
-He describes how beautiful nature is by talking about how the mountains are very beautiful and how the sky brings out their shapes. They also speak of how good it was to be in the antiquity village. This shows how you get away from the dirty slobby city and live good so this uses romanticism.
For example, Irving writes, "Every change of season, every change of weather, indeed every hour of the day, produces some change in the magical hues and shapes of these mountains, and they are regarded by all the good wives, far and near, as perfect
barometers."
-"On entering the amphitheatre, new objects of wonder presented
themselves. On a level spot in the centre was a company of odd-looking
personages playing at nine-pins".
This quote is about elfs that van winkle had seen who gave him magic liquor that put him to sleep for a while. When he finally woke up after a lone period of time, he found everything he knew of before was way different. This explains why this is not logic. You have to use your imagination because nothing like this could happen in real life.

UNIT 2 #1
The standard to me means that in everyones writing there is always a theme. The way we write it helps us determine the theme. In the writing we put supporting details of the main idea which also helps finding the theme. It also tells us there is always going to be a theme it just the process of figuring it out.
Theme is a unifying or dominant idea of a piece of writing.

UNIT 1 #9
9.) These standards were used through this unit by giving us questions that want us to compare and contrast different things. We had to give examples of things and take something and turn it around to put it how u feel about it. When i found a poem i had to then write about how i felt about what they wrote in it. This poem related to back then to life now. Heres an emapole of one thing I wrote about the poem
My example to me is something everyone should reflect on. It tells you to be thankful for life and all the things that come in it. It also tells you that if your not thankful it is something that you choose and you wont be judged for. It shows us how god gave us life for a reason, and we should be thankful that we had a chance to live it.

8.)
-Respect others
-Treat others the way you want to be treated
-Stay away from trouble
-Lose no time
-Enjoy life
-Keep away from drugs
-Be successful
-Make time for family
-Love the ones who love you
-Forgive and Forget
-Be truthful
-Graduate from High School
-Get a good paying job\
I feel I could reach moral perfection if i really tried my best. All my morals give me ways to become a better person. These are ways people now could live a good life, being happy without doing things that could get them into trouble. Everything you do depends on yourself and noone else so thats why i believe i could reach it. It would not be easy, but if i set my mind on it i could reach it.

UNIT 1 #7
7.) Benjamin is a good example of rationalist due to how he set his morals. He depends on making himself better not by asking god to do it for him. He uses logic to do this. He feels he is a bad person and must do this to make him a better person. As he said "I wished to live without committing any fault at any time". Also he said "I would conquer all that either natural inclination, custon, or company might lead me into". This proves how he takes it upon himself to improve.

UNIT 1 #6
6.) Rationalist have thought to believe all humans can improve their lives by doing it theirselves. Puritans belived in order to improve anything they would have to ask god for the improvement. To the Puritans using science to do this is disobeying god, while Rationalist found it to be the best way of doing things. Rationalist use real things in reality to be able to live better and Puritains thought of it as a bad thing to god. The Rationalist also believed that the whole universe could be explained by logic, but Puritains did not believe it was appropriate.

4.) The video shows us that the Puritans have a way of life where the whole time they are living they are scared of god. They think that they are going to hell no matter what they may do in life. While the Native Americans live life to the fullest, and enjoy everything they have. They are also very thankful for everything that comes in life. "Give thanks for your food and the joy of living" which the Native Americans use to say in their prayers. They unlike the Puritans say, its okay to have fun and not be afraid that god will be mad. The Puritans on the other hand believe you have a one way ticket to hell, the proof this by quoting "There is nothing between you and hell but air". If the Puritans and Native Americans ever came together they would not agree on anything. They would believe one another was stupid and had retarded beliefs. There is no possible way they would ever be able to get along.
UNIT 1 #3
3.) My example to me is something everyone should reflect on. It tells you to be thankful for life and all the things that come in it. It also tells you that if your not thankful it is something that you choose and you wont be judged for. It shows us how god gave us life for a reason, and we should be thankful that we had a chance to live it.
UNIT 1 #2
2.)
Give Thanks
When you arise in the morning, give thanks for the morning light, for your life and strength.
Give thanks for your food and the joy of living.
If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies in yourself.

1.) To me the standard is telling us that all students who are in the process of learning literature learns it by comparing it to things that they already know. They take the information givin to them and base it on an experience they have had or what they have learned in the past. This is important for me to master, because it will give me away to be able to remember all the materials i need to know. It also lets me learn things i already know all over again.
